I absolutely am in love with Union Rags. I loved him since he was a 2 year old maiden, and watching him romp in the Fountain of Youth today gave me chills. I don’t mean in the “oh that’s a good horse” way…I mean in the “this horse is really something special” way. The last time I got chills watching a horse run live was Barbaro’s 2006 Derby (ironic, no?)…this horse is just mesmerizing. Wow.
People are deliberately ignorant about anything involving horses. I don’t mean not knowing anything about the sport and they’re curious. No. I mean acting like a 10 year old and making ignorant jokes about this that and the other, just to piss me off. Being a horse racing person in college is interesting because almost nobody TRULY understands how beautiful of a sport it is. Especially in Georgia, where horse racing doesn’t exist. I’m never really that vocal about my love for the sport during class (unless asked) because all we talk about is football, but I always have DRF up on my screen and if there’s a live video stream from a track I’ll have that up too.
I think it’s awesome when people who don’t know about the sport (hunter/jumper or racing) want to ask me stuff and what goes on. I absolutely love informing them and answering any questions they might have! But it’s the people who try to get a rise out of me by saying things like “horse racing isn’t a sport” or “all they do is run around in circles” or my personal favorite, “how is it a sport, the horse does all the work”. Yeah, that one really gets me. I’ve always had respect for non-mainstream sports that might not be as widely popular or well known as say, football or basketball. I may not know alot about it or what goes in to doing that particular sport, but I have ALWAYS had that respect for the people that love it or do it themselves. Do I like football? Not really. I go to an SEC school where football is life and I’m one of the few who really don’t care that much. Do I give a crap about baseball? No, I think it’s one of THE most boring sports in America. But have I ever not had respect for the participants in those sports or made deliberately ignorant comments to any person to get a rise out of them? Absolutely. Not.
I get it. Horse racing or jumping or whatever horse sport you love aren’t technically “mainstream” according to the American public. Who cares? It doesn’t make them any less of a sport. It’s just different. I can take jokes with the best of people, believe me. I’m a jokester myself. But constant joking slowly turns into ignorance in my book, and ignorance and I do not get along well. People need to grow up. I’ve been in college for almost three years now, and even if people don’t know anything about the sport of horse racing, a little maturity regarding others passions and interests would be just super.
