I’ve just been busy settling into Lexington and getting into my work! For those of you who are actually curious, things here are pretty freaking amazing. After work, my boss and I went around and fed all the stallions carrots just because we could (and because I went to Kroger and bought a giant bag that we couldn’t let go to waste :P) Anyways, being around horses that are considered some of the best horses of their respective generations is pretty incredible.
The only “bummer” I’ve come across is that I won’t be able to buy a membership to a crossfit gym here. I can’t afford it, even though the gym here is LEGIT and their team is even going to the games, but I am quickly understanding the value of a dollar and realizing that sometimes things just are out of my reach financially. I’m sure I will be able to drop in from time to time like I did last week, but I have to save my money and be smart about how I use it this summer and in the future. I’ll tell you guys though, doing bodyweight WODS in my room or the park are NOT the same as being in a box. It’s not and it never will be. I hate it that I can’t go regularly, if at all, but crossfit isn’t going anywhere and I will have to just do what I can with what I have. I might try and find a little globo-gym (GROSS) that’s really cheap JUST so I can keep doing barbell work. No bueno.
The paleo thing has taken a little more of a toll on my finances too. Not in the actual fresh food I’m buying, but the “expensive-ness” of things like almond flour, coconut oil, almond butter, etc. has quickly begun to stack up. Kinda stinks because I LOVE almond butter (I just need to find a Trader Joe’s up here so I can afford it!) and I think almond flour is great, but at this point in my young life I can’t spend 11 dollars for a tiny bag of almond flour every other week. I just can’t. I’ve substituted flaxseed meal (used that for pancakes this morning) and it’s substantially cheaper than almond meal, but it’s a little dense I’ve come to find out after making pancakes this morning! They were still pretty darn good though :) I’m still eating paleo of course because I absolutely love love love the lifestyle, I’m just learning (aka growing up) that I have to be able to adjust for my current financial situation. It doesn’t mean I have to give up the lifestyle AT ALL (not that I would anyways), it just means that I might have to make some substitutes and mild modifications to help get the most out of my money when I grocery shop.
Well, I think this ridiculously long post covering my life and crossfit/paleo sort of makes up for the lack of posting the past few weeks! Speaking of Paleo, I’m going to go make myself some burgers and veggies now :)
To the lovely state of Kentucky tomorrow morning to embark on my summer adventure :) So excited I probably won’t sleep that much tonight. Can’t believe I’ll be on the same property as these two studs (along with MANY others).
How long have you been on the Paleo diet? And do you have any advice to a Paleo (and Tumblr) newbie? :)
Hi there Tumblr/Paleo newbie! :) I’ve been doing Paleo strictly for about a month and a half now, but before I made the decision to dive all in, I was doing mostly paleo with dairy and the occasional whole wheat wrap or sandwich. I’m a complete CrossFit addict so I knew I was going to dive in for strict paleo sooner or later! Haha. For me, it is no longer a “diet” (I hate that word sometimes!), but it has truly become a lifestyle. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true!
So since you’re new to the paleo lifestyle (that’s AWESOME you’re deciding to do it by the way), I would say the biggest key and piece of advice I can give you isfind what works for YOU. For example, what works for me (being 100% strict) might not be what you want to do immediately, so in your case it might be easier to ease into the lifestyle rather than just jumping all in to start. See what I’m saying? :) It CAN be for everyone, it’s just a matter of seeing what your body says when you make those changes.
With that being a sort of textbook answer, I want to say personally that for me, the biggest thing has been determination, perseverance, and keeping those mental and physical goals in your brain every single day so that when it does get tough (and believe me, it does), you can fight through it and stay on track. Finding support in friends or family is big too. My family supports me 100% thank goodness, and all my crossfit peeps do too. My best friends who don’t crossfit understand what I’m doing too and are supportive. And on Tumblr of course, there are LOADS of supportive people :) You came to the right place to find whatever you were looking for…whether that’s support, answered questions, or anything else crossfit/paleo/nutrition related! For me, the paleo lifestyle has changed my way of thinking. This whole way of life morphs your thinking from “mindlessly eating” to “I’m fueling myself to be stronger and healthier”. It’s very empowering in my opinion :) If it hasn’t done that for you already, it will soon!
I know it will get tough, because believe me, I wanted SO BADLY this amazing cherry pie and blueberry banana bread my mom made last night, but I walked away. Instead, I went to the store, got some paleo ingredients, and made myself those delicious pumpkin coconut protein muffins I posted earlier :) You can always come to me for questions/support/ideas/ anything! Hope this helped you at least a little in your fresh paleo lifestyle journey!
How did you get an internship at Three Chimneys?! That sounds so awesome, I'm so jealous.
Aw thanks! I was lucky enough to knock on the right doors at the right time, and once I sent my resume things just started rolling haha. I see you like Point Given from your URL name…i spent time with him last weekend and he’s a very, very sweet boy :)
Question for the wonderful Tumblr CrossFit community...
I’m going to start using protein shakes in my diet (probably in the morning and as a recovery after a WOD), except I know that whey protein isn’t technically paleo. I see people use Progenex or other sort of protein powder, but since I’m a NCAA athlete we have a ton of banned substances that are in alot of these powders. Our nutritionist gave me a NCAA compliant powder that is 100% whey protein, but obviously not paleo because I guess whey is dairy based or something. Can CF athletes eat strict paleo minus the whey protein shake? I would really appreciate any answers!! What do you all do??
